The Learning Theatre Organisation was called on to produce a workshop that would mobilise illiterate workers of South Africa's premier electricity supplier to enroll for, and complete a literacy course.
The group of four actors and a company manager traveled in excess of twenty thousand kilometers in a three-month period, performing to approximately 5000 people during 80 performances. They also worked in four different languages, often jumping from one language to another during a single performance in order to meet the linguistic needs of their audiences.
They played in venues that ranged from boardrooms to classrooms, workshops to staff canteens. All their props and costumes fitted into a suitcase and they did all their traveling in a 4 x 4 off road vehicle.
They weren't featured in any news articles and they didn't make the entertainment columns of the magazines, but they did reach many people and they did indeed change lives, with many personal testimonies to the effectiveness of their message and a satisfied client.
