Objectives
The objectives of this Industrial Theatre Intervention are: -
- Help to develop safe work habits and attitudes.
- Focus attention on specific causes of accidents.
- Supplement existing safety training.
- Give employees an opportunity to participate in accident prevention activities.
- Provide a channel for communication and co-operation between workers and management.
Description
This intervention consists of four short plays with a continuous story line. Short facilitation sessions takes place between the plays.
Two actors one black, one white play all the parts, alternating and changing as necessary. The style is high energy making use of humour as well as pathos to create an emotional experience for the audience.
Play one.
Joey arrives at his new workplace an automotive workshop. Cyril, the Safety rep, meets him. They exchange greetings and the Cyril starts telling Joey about the safety rules and regulations that exist in the place. Joey scoffs, saying that it is a waste of time and energy and anyway what could happen that would be so dangerous? The scene ends when Cyril shows Joey his artificial leg and explains that he lost it in an industrial accident.

- Negative attitudes towards safety, Health and Environment (SHE) and incident reporting.

- Conformance to requirements and zero tolerance.
Play Two
Joey meets Brian the workshop manager. Brian explains about the necessity to keep the workplace clean and clarifies the company's affiliation to NOSA. Joey is argumentative, taking the stance that most of these safety procedures were developed to create extra work. Brian explains that each employee has a responsibility towards himself and others to be safety conscious. He assigns Joey to work with Jack, and Joey undertakes to become a responsible safety conscious employee.

- Responsibility towards legislation, economic -, moral and social issues.
- The different roles such as employees, employer, SHE rep, NOSA, etc.
- Ability and willingness to identify risk, promotes safe behaviour.
Play Three
Joey and Jack are having a lunch break. Jack scoffs at the safety regulations telling Joey that he has been around for years and has never seen a serious accident. Joey argues the case for safety, but Jack is not interested. He says that he has enough experience to cope with anything. Joey warns him about a faulty gas bottle but Jack says he's been using it for weeks. The scene ends with a gas explosion, which kills Jack and blinds Joey.

- Blaming others, Negative attitudes towards SHE extra paperwork, purposefully ignoring unsafe practices, excuses, etc.
- Consequences of unsafe behaviour.
Play Four
Joey is waiting for his workman's compensation hearing. He is blinded. With him is Cyril. Cyril tries to console Joey, but Joey keep on saying If Only
. They end with a song that will underpin the messages of the four plays.
The four plays run for approximately 30 minutes.
