World Environmental Day is on the 5th of June each year and this year FOSKOR in Richardsbay (Kwazulu Natal) decided to prepare for a whole day of celebration! The aim was to celebrate the privilege of having Mother Nature in our company daily, and on this day, joining forces to rejoice in her uniqueness and unconditional giving. The focus was not only on Mother Nature as a privilege, but also on the responsibility that is associated with such a great privilege.
The nature of the industry in which FOSKOR operates calls for a huge responsibility with regards to Safety, Heath and Environment (SHE). In a working environment where routine maintenance becomes second nature, it is of utmost importance never to lose track of this responsibility, as well as of the consequences associated with possible neglect. World Environment Day reminds each and all of the privilege, responsibility and consequences of SHE.
The fun-filled day at the FOSKOR premises included a speech programme from a local school, speeches from authority figures, and prize draws, to name but a few. The highlight of the agenda, however, was The Learning Theatre Organisation’s Industrial Theatre production entitled ‘Superman Goes Nowhere’. Adapted from its original generic format, ‘Superman Goes Nowhere’ told the story of Cyril and Joey, both employees of a company similar to FOSKOR.
Cyril being the older, more rigid and stubborn employee, is placed in charge of the much younger Joey, recently appointed at the firm. As the story unfolds, the audience realizes that they are struggling with the exact same issues that Cyril and Joey are dealing with. Throughout the familiar, highly energetic and hilarious scenes and musical interludes, the audience joins the actors in an emotion-filled journey to discover the consequences of neglect – the worst case scenario if you will. In a shocking turn of events the audience is left with a real and gripping reminder of the vital importance of SHE in their everyday lives and their daily routines.
‘Superman Goes Nowhere’ was created by The Learning Theatre Organisation to touch the hearts and minds of the audience, thus creating a lasting awareness of the responsibility and consequences of SHE in any organisation. On World Environmental Day, 5 June 2007, there was a renewed sense of appreciation for nature, environment, life, safety, living and health in the jam-packed venue on the FOSKOR premises.
